Kitten will be at Retro Revival, 22nd Sept 2012!

Retro Revival 1940s Event

So Mr. Moo emailed me earlier today and said something on the lines of “Well gee-whizz Mrs Mew, did you see the fabulous image Retro Revival are using on their advertisement of you?”

As I had never heard of the event I went and had a peek…Low and behold it is being organised by my gorgeously purrfect pals at Friends of the 40’s!

I have performed in Manchester and Sheffield, but never Liverpool and Ian and Sam have invited me to make an appearance at the event! I will be performing at Goodwood Revival the weekend before and am determined NOT to get laryngitis this time, so hopefully I will be singing for you at Retro Revival and will pose for photos too! You will see me in my ATS corset along with another vintage outfit (coverage will depend on the weather).

So if you are around the Merseyside area or looking for a 1940’s event more “Up t’ North like”, pop along to this Saturday event!

Kitten Meets Brian Blessed

I always think fondly of Brian Blessed for his roles as Spiro in My Family and Other Animals and of course Prince Vultan in Flash Gordon. From an incredible singing voice in cats to a voice over in Star Wars Phantom Menace, this cheerful and approachable chap has done it all…oh yes and climbed Everest…

Well it just so happened that today I got to meet one of my Bucket List Celebrities! I was lucky as he was about to leave the event, but on seeing me bellowed “Where have you been? Ive been waiting for you my whole life!” I had brought him along one of my calendars as a gift and he was so interested in my love of the 40’s and said that he never wanted to grow up out of those eras.

I then asked if he wouldn’t mind signing a mug for me. An odd request I know, but I bought this antique mug from a carboot sale for putting a pincushion in and have become rather fond of it. As it has a mountain climber design and a blank back, I thought it would be the perfect souvenir of our meeting!

Brian Blessed’s autograph on the back of my vintage mug. Im presuming it is 1930’s by the look of it. Best £3 I ever spent!

I had in fact met Brian when I was about 16, but was too star struck to approach him back then. I managed to do some work experience at a local film company (that I later worked for before it closed down). He was doing some voice over work for a documentary on Everest and would walk into the small office building with a booming ‘HELLOOOOOO!” He wouldn’t have remembered me. Back then I had purple hair and hid under baggy jumpers and tartan trousers…

So that was my 30 minute lunch break, what did you do with yours?

Johnson’s Originals

I had a lovely email from someone yesterday saying how much they enjoyed the old fashioned advert in my previous post, so I thought I would share another I created for a repro vintage shoe company!

I took inspiration from a few shoe and dieting adverts in my 1940’s magazines to come up with the above! The photo was taken just after performing at Wartime in the Vale last weekend.

More about Johnson’s Shoes can be found here. The 1940’s styles they do are gorgeous and they also do men’s wing tips as well as women’s platforms and wedges!

1940’s Style Hair Snoods

Hair snoods are the perfect head wear for vintage events, bad hair days and when you are pin curling your hair!

Most are available in the Medieval and Civil War styles, which were popular in WWII thanks to the Gone with the Wind and Robin Hood movies. Crocheted hair nets became popular for factory workers, especially those who fashioned Veronica Lake’s flowing tresses, only to end up with them caught in a machine. Snood stopped such awful accidents from occurring and became a fashionable and useful item for war work and beyond.

There are still a lot of people who recreate these hair snoods today, but not many who also focus on the more unique styles!

Naomi at Arthelia’s Attic on Etsy makes her snoods from original patterns and can even custom make them with crocheted flowers or a matching purse!

WI Masquerade Ball

My lovely cat mask!

I thought I would share a few photos taken at the WI Masquerade Ball last weekend in Stratford upon Avon.

I sang a set of 40’s and 50’s songs in my big ballgown and then later did my Mewy Antoinette burlesque fan dance.

The funny thing was that I couldn’t put my left foot down for the entire 20 minute singing set as I could feel something weird under my heel that I had obviously dragged across the floor in the train of the dress. This ended up as being a plastic clothes peg…oh the glamour!

Pincushion Corsages!

I have updated my Sew on and Sew Forth page with fabulous new images AND a new style! My Pincushion Corsages are the handiest pincushions for tailors and dress makers. Ideal for alterations at events, hemming dresses at home or in your shop, they are pretty and functional at the same time! The felt petals double up as needle book pages, whilst the centre of the flower is a pincushion with stamen dress pins included! The flower is attached to an elastic wrist strap and these corsages come in a wide variety of colourways including my special Coronation Corsage in red, white and blue!

At £15 each, these are 100% handmade, hand finished and great Christmas gifts. I will be selling them at vintage fair on 18th December and mail order by emailing kvm@email.com.

Gracie Wheels – Keep Calm and Caravan

1960's Safari Caravan with a retro transformation!

I would like to introduce you to Gracie Wheels. She is a 1979 Safari Caravan and my partner and I have been doing her up since February. As attendees will know; hotels and B&B’s are a huge expense when visiting such shows as War and Peace for the best part of a week, so Gracie will be our home away from home!

She had been lovingly cared for by her previous owner, who was sorry to let her go. I had big plans for this vintage caravan from the beginning and had a patriotic, summery vintage theme in my head. Once my ideas board was complete we bought the paint colours and set to work!  With a little help from some vintage reproduction accessories from Dotcomgiftshop and a selection of yummy fabrics we were off to a flying start! I even designed my very own fabric which you can buy here . We still have a way to go, but she has passed her service with only a few things to sort out (“Don’t turn on the gas heater or you may die of Carbon Monoxide poisoning, but other that that she is in good nick!”) and a slight damp problem which is usual for old caravans and some have already been sorted out.

Gracie Wheels will make her debut at Wartime in the Vale in Evesham this June. We want a little test run that isn’t too far from home, just in case of any problems. I hope you enjoy her photos below!

Gracie Fields Vintage Caravan

This shows a before and after of our Vintage Caravan. The only thing that has changed is the panel which has the lantern windows in, which is now pale blue.

Gracie Wheels Vintage Caravan Dresser

This was one of the features I loved most about the caravan. Unfortunately the top had water damage, but Richard did a great job of creating a new one and doing the detailing around the edge. On the top you will see various accessories and a 1950 wind up record player

Gracie Wheels Vintage Caravan Kitchen

I wanted something jolly and something that seperated the kitchen and living space without walls. The yellow doors were in homage to my Grandad’s 1930’s kitchen, which my Grandma had painted a custard yellow! We got the great lino flooring from Carpet Right. The cooker and hob are gas and the fridge runs on gas and electric!

Gracie Wheels Vintage Caravan Livingroom

We were so pleased with the outcome of the main living space! What a difference! I made the curtains, pillows and arm rests and the vintage bakelite radio houses an MP3 player with 1940’s radio shows and music on.
