As many of you know, I regularly write articles for the magazine, but issue 10 has a rather big surprise in the middle! Taken by Candee Photography and modelling the Heyday Mary Dress, this pinup poster is perfect for your reenactment camp and already has an aged look to it!

Woman’s Own Magazine!
You may just spot me on the double page feature spread in this month’s copy on ‘Alternative Lifestyles’!
A few facts are wrong, so just to clarify a few things…
- Things in our cottage date back to the 1930’s to the 1940’s. The 3 piece suite is Art Deco as are many of my furnishings and we love collecting WWII memorabilia and clothing!
- When I was about 11 I was wearing my Grandma’s Victorian boots, high necked blouses and plaid skirts. I was wearing 1950’s clothing from around 2000
- I was spotted by a local photographer in 2001 and was in full time employment at that point. My Media Studies course was in 1996 after leaving school.
- My name Kitten Von Mew came into effect in 2001 as a modelling name
- I met Richard in 2008 whilst he was part of the USO shows, of which I joined as a burlesque entertainer. We did not start dating until late 2010/ early 2011.
- I do not think there was ‘something so simple and British’ about the 1940’s. I believe it was a time of uniting together, keeping up morale and making do/ getting creative with what you had.

Goodwood Revival 2012
With only 9 days left until the glory of Goodwood Revival yet again zooms it’s way around the track, I thought I would tell you some exciting developments for this year’s show! Revival is far from just classic car racing Catnips, it is a full day of entertainment, vintage and vintage inspired stalls, aircraft displays, famous racing car displays and more!
This year is especially exciting for me as they are featuring a new entertainments section called Over The Road, which is more early 1940’s inspired than the 1948-1966 areas that are usually on offer! Here you will find the famous Chap Olympiad (Ok, so they are more 20’s/30’s, but they are also a complete hoot and worth watching!) and Mr. B the Gentleman Rhymer who wraps in a King’s English accent over hip hop soundtracks and also pays the banjo splendidly(I will be sneakily trying to catch a glimpse myself as YouTube videos will not quench my thirst for his eclectic rhythm). As well as this there will be other pieces of entertainment in the Victory Street Party, which hosts a variety of stalls, an Earl Grey Tea Shop (yum!) and 2 hilarious eateries/ watering holes named Dig For Victory (think salads and fruit smoothies) and the Spit n Sawdust pub!
I will be there in my RAF corset doing meet and greets and posing for pictures, so please collar me as I walk by for a photo and chat! I hope to see many regular faces as well as new ones and remember to take the opportunity to dress up and join in the fun!
Twinwood Festival 2012
Voted in the top 20 of UK festivals by The Telegraph 3 years running, Twinwood Festival is back for another great year! From 25th to 27th August, I will be there and performing Burlesque on the Saturday and Sunday evenings!
I am so excited as there will be a NEW entertainment marque, that can house 2000 people and not only will *swoon* Max Raabe be performing there…I will be too!
You will get to see my Lili Mewleen act in the Colonial Club, which was debuted at War and Peace Show this year and a fan dance with my ATS corset and some fun Gracie Fields songs to get you all singing along in Cafe du Bois and the Casablanca Club!
The fantastic Sticky Wicket band will be there, my gorgeous Madeline Brown and Lola Lamour…did I already say MAX RAABE?…and sooooo many more acts.
For a little history behind Twinwood, you may not know that this was the airfield that Glenn Miller made his last flight from, before disappearing. They have a fantastic museum on site, that you must go and visit on Sunday. It is open 10.30am til 4pm, so plenty of time to fit in some culture before you Shag on the dance floor (it’s a dance move Ma…).
Remember to save your pennies before the event as there are heaps of swell stalls selling vintage bric-a-brac, clothing, repro and Vintage Life Magazine too! Strut your stuff in the evening in a new outfit from one of the stalls!
On Sunday and Monday ‘The Last Flight’ will be shown twice daily in the Tin Hat at approx 2.30 and 7.00 each day. I saw the live stage play in Leamington Spa a year or more back and it was incredibly well done and truly spine chilling. I can’t wait to see how they have turned it into a film.
There is something going on all day and night, whether it is watching a singer, dancing to a band, learning a bit of swing or watching Burlesque, so whether you are into the 30’s, 40’s or 50’s, head on down to this amazing event!

Lili Mewleen Act Debuted at Beltring 2012
I have just received some great photos from Lee Parker of my new Lili Marleen inspired act, so I thought I would share some with you all!
My very talented Mr Mew made the lamp from scratch and I made my pasties, fascinator, train and garter. The dress once belonged to a drag queen (who has passed away, rest his soul). I stripped it of all the black ruffles, tassel trim, netting and fake boob inserts and designed it into a sleek and sexy gown with rhinestones and turquoise trimmings.
The gorgeous corset is actually from Vollers Corsets! When I did my interview for The One Show at the corset factory, I got to see some lovely designs that weren’t even for sale. I saw these zip down corsets and thought they were a brilliant idea! They are still tight lace with metal boning, but have a ‘quick release’ function with a very heavy duty, military grade zipper at the side. Determined for other corset lovers to see these unique designs, I vowed to wear one in an act to demonstrate how easy and sexily them come off! No more tangled lacing! Hurrah!
I wrote a parody of Lili Marleen as well as sang The Boys in the Backroom for Terry Elliot! You can see this act next at Twinwood Festival 2012!

Kitten Meets Brian Blessed
I always think fondly of Brian Blessed for his roles as Spiro in My Family and Other Animals and of course Prince Vultan in Flash Gordon. From an incredible singing voice in cats to a voice over in Star Wars Phantom Menace, this cheerful and approachable chap has done it all…oh yes and climbed Everest…
Well it just so happened that today I got to meet one of my Bucket List Celebrities! I was lucky as he was about to leave the event, but on seeing me bellowed “Where have you been? Ive been waiting for you my whole life!” I had brought him along one of my calendars as a gift and he was so interested in my love of the 40’s and said that he never wanted to grow up out of those eras.
I then asked if he wouldn’t mind signing a mug for me. An odd request I know, but I bought this antique mug from a carboot sale for putting a pincushion in and have become rather fond of it. As it has a mountain climber design and a blank back, I thought it would be the perfect souvenir of our meeting!

Brian Blessed’s autograph on the back of my vintage mug. Im presuming it is 1930’s by the look of it. Best £3 I ever spent!
I had in fact met Brian when I was about 16, but was too star struck to approach him back then. I managed to do some work experience at a local film company (that I later worked for before it closed down). He was doing some voice over work for a documentary on Everest and would walk into the small office building with a booming ‘HELLOOOOOO!” He wouldn’t have remembered me. Back then I had purple hair and hid under baggy jumpers and tartan trousers…
So that was my 30 minute lunch break, what did you do with yours?
Kitten von Mew Calendar Teaser!
I have had quite a few emails asking whether I could post a few of the 2013 calendar pages as they wish to pre-order, so here are some below!
Just email me with your name, address of delivery and quantity and we can sort out payment when they have arrived back from the printers.
I will also be selling them at Wartime in the Vale on the 23rd/24th June!
Ich bin ein Burl-iner!
Burlesque in Berlin! Just incase you didn’t get the title of this blog post!
I had been looking forward to this legendary trip for a good year! A chance to see and ride on an original military steam train, see Berlin and be part of this amazing journey…the first of it’s kind in fact!
Having flown from Birmingham to Hamburg (thank goodness they will start flying direct to Berlin from June!) and figuring out the trains (ignore the boards and ask the ticket information guys), we headed to our hotel! After around 9 hours of travelling, we were looking forward to getting refreshed befor eheading out at 6.30pm for my performance at RAF Gatow!
This collection of aircraft hangers and military displays is now in a maze of new housing estates, which have been built on part of the old airfield. A complete treasure hidden away, RAF Gatow is a wonderful museum and was the perfect place for the Airlift Spirit Evening. It brought together ‘puffer nutters’, war veterans and people who wanted to do something unique with their weekend; all of whom I would see again on the locomotive.
The Black Kilts Pipe Band (hilariously only 1 of the guys is Scottish and the rest are German, wonderful chaps!), some Irish dancers (also all German) and a choir were entertaining that evening and I was to do my RAF Fancy Fan Dance, extended with a few songs to lift the mood and ease the Vets in to the fact I was wearing rather little under my wool coat. Atleast most were sitting down, but I wanted them to be of fit enough health to enjoy their steam train trip too…
The performance went without hitch and although my little RAF cap refused to behave, I mentally ‘had words’ and it decided to more or less play ball. I sang a couple of my favourite Gracie Fields numbers before slipping into my regular burlesque act, but this time having my spitfire shaped nipple pasties to greet the crowd with a wiggly-jiggly fly-past.
The next day was the start of the big event! Our first look at the awesome steam train with 15 carriages and a diesel engine on tow! We all placed outselves on the platform, awaiting the arrival of a looming loco, only to realise that it had pulled in behind us at the wrong platform. I had to laugh as it was a very ‘It’s behind you!!!’ moment. I was wearing my ATS corset for photos and kept it on for a good couple of hours before needing to change into something a little more practical. The weather on Friday had been rather a heatwave, so I think a lot of us were surprised how chilly the following day was!

My ATS corset outfit made by G.Hodder out of an original (moth eaten and no good for wearing) uniform. She did an amazing job and this corset will be making an appearance at War and Peace Show this year!
With a quick stop at Marienborn Station to take a look at the engine and derelict building, it was time to jump aboard for our next stop at Helmstedt. On the Saturday, this stop was particularly lovely! The sun shone and the crowds greated us at the station waving Union Jack flags! The Black Kilts Pipe Band led a procession to the pretty town square where the major and other VIP’s gave a speech from the balcony of an old building…briefly interrupted by the adjacent church bells ringing out God Save The Queen as it struck on the hour.
By this time my feet were rather aching as I forgot that although my 1940’s style shoes look gorgeous, inside the shoe itself, my toes are boshing into each other like a rowdy pub brawl. It was starting to get a little chilly, so after a quick picture with Peter (an artist we met on board who painted a special picture for the journey), Mr. Mew and I staggered back up the steep hill to the station. Luckily we had bought a rather whopping piece of strawberry sponge at a market stall as we didn’t have time for breakfast that morning!
After kicking my shoes off in carriage 13 and rearranging my ‘Little Piggies’ into a respectable line, I was soon asked by the official photographer to go to the front of the train, so that when when we arrived at Hannover, we could hop off the train and do a PR shoot at the front of the engine. I put on my Iron Maidens again and staggered drunkenly (but glamorously) to the front carriage. We then tottered to the front of the train for photos and I even managed to get up to pose with the engine driver!
After the shoot I asked Mr. Mew for his photo before we got back on the train…Just after pressing the shutter button I realised that the train was pulling away from the station…
Unfortunately we hadn’t realised that this was a scheduled 2 hour stop and in our haste to do the shoot I had left my handbag, money, phone and coat in the carriage. As my toes waved white flags of surrender, Mr Mew and I made our way down the steps to the shopping mall to shelter from the cold breeze and find a seat. Unfortunately unless you were at one of the eateries, there were no seats at all and as we wondered around the shopping centre I stared enviously through the windows of shoe shops with comfy soles and comfy souls in coffee shops enjoying a warm drink.
After an hour and a bit, we managed to blag our way into the 1st Class DB lounge at the station, where we flopped into comfy red leather chairs for half an hour. I had to verbally lash Mr Mew to the seat when he saw the complimentary drinks available as we had already pushed our luck with the manager!
At last we got back on the train and the shoes came back off! Once warmed up my spirits rose again and at 8.10pm we made our way to the restaurant car where the lovely catering staff had prepared us some cheesy potatoes and smoked salmon (our first proper meal of the day!). We could have been eating lobster for all we cared, it was wonderful! On the way there I was cornered by a group of passengers in the bar carriage who requested a song. I don’t know why nerves didn’t take hold, especially with acapella of which I had never done, but I sang We’ll Meet Again and a song from my new act. They all joined in and we had a wonderful time!
The next day I made sure I was dressed dar more comfortably in my Heyday trousers and a knitted top made for me from an original pattern. I was now able to enjoy the journey far more! Learning from mistakes of the previous day, the train manager put the hilarious Rabbi on to the tanoy system with each stop and for regular information updates. He had us all in stitches!
I got to meet some fabulous people on the trip and spent most of Sunday collecting autographs in my souvenir brochure before breaking down in tears at the end of the journey when we pulled into Berlin for the last time. It was a wonderful experience and I met some amazing people who had been on the military steam train in the war and beyond!

Just going through the rushes of my very amateur video of Saturday’s train and have a nice shot of you at Marienborn with the loco. Sally and I will be thinking of you and Richard with much fondness on June 2nd. You really made the event swing from beginning to end – you both must have been exhausted, but what a fantastic contribution you made to an extraordinary and fabulous day.
STOP PRESS!!! Kitten’s New Burlesque Act
This is an exclusive look at my new costume and act ‘Lili Mewleen’, which will be released from it’s burlesque shackles at the War and Peace Show 2012!
A nod to one of my favourite female icons Marlene Dietrich, this act features a 7 ft lampost made by Mr. Mew and a STUNNING Vollers corset that has a ‘quick release function’. I got to try on this stunner of a corset when I did the interview for The One Show and met the gorgeous Corina and her fabulous group of ladies in the factory. Knowing how much work goes into these British made corsets has given me even more faith in the UK industry!
I made the fascinator, garter and bustle. The dress was once a rather black lacy and frilly affair (once owned by a drag queen) of which I stripped down to the basics and started again with electric blue!
This fun act will also be staged at Twinwood Festival this year in a brand new entertainment hall, which will also house my swoon-fest Max Raabe!
