Halloween 2012

With so much preparation, I can hardly believe it is all over (although slightly glad that I can have a vaguely clean house before the Christmas decorations go up!).

This year was so much fun thanks to visiting friends AND trying pumpkin engraving for the first time and loving the effect. We went mad decorating the cottage and it looked amazing. Here are some photos of our best bits, costumes and decorations!

The Corpse Bride Halloween Costume

It’s a well known fact that I LOVE Halloween. Ever since I was a child, I have never been one for plain old costumes and created ever more unique ensembles, ranging from Dracula with a puppet snake (made out of a pair of tights and worn like a sock puppet), road kill and Charlotte (a famous girl ghost of Warwickshire who was locked in the family tomb in the plague as they thought she was dead, only to re-open the tomb later to find her dead on the steps with her fingernails worn away from clawing at the entrance and chunks of her arm missing…presumably from hunger and madness).

Last year I experimented with a 1920’s harlequin and sugar skull makeup and this year I have been given the opportunity to try and recreate Tim Burton’s fabulous Corpse Bride! I have longed to do this ever since watching the film, but finding the time and excuse has been difficult. With an aptly themed Birmingham Dr Sketchys on the way and a small Halloween get together, I think I may have found the excuse!

Candee, Birmingham Dr Sketchys curator and my dear friend, donated a wedding dress for me to play around with. After trying it on to test the style, I carefully cut out the underskirts and set about cutting off the sleeves and bodice, so that I could re-attach with a more A-line look. The silk gave the gown a fabulous vintage feel from the offset, whilst the Venice lace around the edge helped give a ragged feel to the train. I dyed the bodice and skirt separately in a tin bath with China Blue Dylon dye, taking the bodice out after a few minutes as I wanted this paler. I started getting concerned that it was turning green but luckily it did eventually go pale blue! The Corpse Bride’s dress was actually white, but I loved how the dress took on a blue hue in the moonlight and shadows as it gave it more atmosphere. I played the movie again and again to get a feel of the train with its holes and jagged edges and to get the other small details right, such as the purple-blue edging. I managed this with some BMW Topaz Blue spray paint and hand painted over the top with blue and purple acrylics all the way around the train and bodice edges. I also added spray paint around the holes and tears to make them really stand out.

Next came that hole, revealing the Bride’s ribs. After searching online for costumes and SFX latex body parts I decided to make my own simple version. I didn’t want gory or bloody and bits of flesh hanging off the bones. The beauty of Tim Burton is the clean lines and purity. Death was portrayed as the colourful happy place compared to ‘upstairs’ (Life), which was tinted with sepia and dull greys. I used high quality black velvet for the background as this fabric is perfect for absorbing the light, giving the illusion of a dark cavity. For the ribs I found some off-white ribbon sewed 2 lengths together to make a tube and stuffed it with polyester stuffing. I made 4 of these and then sewed them onto the black velvet with a slight curve to make the effect of ribs. This was then glued to the inside of the bodice and left to dry whilst I danced around the room with excitement.

This weekend I managed to complete the headdress and veil! The veil in the animation is made from Muslin, which has a good tatty feel to it. I happened to have some spare and kept it off white, whilst cutting jagged edges and spraying them with the car paint. In some parts of the movie, you can see swirly vine detailing on the veil. It is sometimes portrayed in grey and others in purple, so I took the theatrical route and went the latter so it stood out.

handmade-corpse-bride-veil

the-corpse-bride-headdress

Next came the headdress. I had bought a long wig from Ebay which ended up being purple and not dark blue! It doesn’t look too bad, so sprayed a little paint on it to add some matting. The headdress itself I made out of thin plastic corset boning wrapped with leaves, berries and flowers. There are more on one side than the other, which is true of the film too when you see the piano duet scene. I sprayed with the same blue paint and over-painted with grey acrylics. The veil was then attached to the back by folding over the top edge.

Next the legs…The Corpse Bride has one skeleton leg with skin on her foot and ankle like a baggy blue sock, whilst her other leg is blue skin. This is easily done by cutting off 1 blue leg from your tights and attaching a skeleton print one in its place. You can then use the cut off blue leg to use as the baggy skin. Genius huh?

The arm has been a little more difficult. I haven’t got the pennies to buy a prop skeleton arm (my first idea), so will be doctoring a skeleton print glove by adding more length and extra bone. This will then be sewn to the underarm of the bodice and held on the shoulder with some toupee tape if needed.

I have the makeup ordered (light green for the base, then blue and white to blend with purple eye powder for shadows) and will post about this when I have tried it out!

Enjoy the photos of my costume and I will get some shots IN the costume on Halloween!

Honeymoon Snaps

Short of getting the projector out to sit you down in front of 100’s of slides with an informative oral description for each, I thought I should post some of our honeymoon snaps for you to oogle over…

Richard and Kitten von Mew in their honeymoon outfits at Orlando Airport!

We left the wedding Blitz Ball in sheets of rain, bound for London to an airport hotel. After a few hours sleep we headed for the airport and found ourselves practising for the theme park queues as we checked our luggage in. Good old Virgin tried to sit us in completely different parts of the plane, but after a lot of persistence we managed to get a seat next to each other in economy without having to pay for an upgrade.

We got a great reaction from passengers about our Honeymoon outfits and cases, but I think the airport staff thought we were just trying to get a free upgrade and had come in fancy dress! The Orlando airport crew were completely different and people at the desk were even taking pictures on their phones!

The Harry Potter world was the main thing I had been looking forward to in the theme parks and I literally shook with excitement as soon as I saw the gate leading into a replica of Hogsmeade. Complete with snow capped roofs, Owl Post and all the shops associated with the books and movies, I was in my element!!!

Handmade Boudoir Dolls – Mae Day

I have always longed for a vintage boudoir doll. Some people find them deeply disturbing and something of horror films, but I find most rather charming and even the smoking bed dolls make me smile. It is something about dolls made for grown women that makes the fact I still have my teddy bear seem acceptable…

Anyway, because of the price of the nicest examples of boudoir doll, I decided to try making my own. I adapted a pattern I found online for the limbs and torso, creating the alien-like body from felt.

I had great fun doing the face and used a doll face mould and cotton wool pads dipped in watered down PVA glue! Once dried I painted with acrylics. The texture of the cotton wool pads has given the face a wonderfully old look. I didn’t want this doll to look brand spanking new, I much preferred a more ‘look what I just found in this old attic trunk!’ look.

I originally wanted her to be lounging in lingerie and a Chinese silk robe, but unfortunately we mislaid the bag of silk remnants! I managed to create some French knickers out of two tone silk with old lace trim and a bra top to match. Because these dolls have iconically long limbs, she looked a little disturbing with no hair and more like something from Close Encounters as opposed to Brief Encounter.

After checking my scrap fabrics, I came across an old dress of my sisters with a great crochet overlay and tassels, which lent itself beautifully as a flapper dress! I used an uphostery tassel and beaded trip as decoration and made a long necklace out of some 1930’s and 50’s beads I had lying around. The choker is the clasp from a pearl necklace that exploded a few years back.

Her hair is slightly more ‘poofy’ than I originally wanted, but as my first try, I am very proud of her!

She reminds me of Virginia from the 1971 Upstairs Downstairs. What was it with 1970’s period dramas where they would sneak in the bouffant hair do wherever they could get away with it?!

Mad Hatters Hen Party Photos!

On Saturday I had my amazing hen party! We arranged it at Candee’s house and she, Becky and I transformed the living room into an enchanted woodland for the occasion.

Candee’s partner Jacob did an amazing job making cupcakes and coconut macaroons. You would have thought he had a cottage industry going with the amount he managed to make. I felt like swimming through them like Scrooge McDuck and his room of gold coins…

Becky made 4 incredible floor cushions in the shape of leafy hillocks. I nicknamed them ‘My humps, my humps, my leafy fleecy lumps!’ and each had a little ladybird button on it and wonderful detailing. I was amazingly impressed with her craft skills. She also made a huge bag of red tissue roses to adorn the front hedges!

John from The Cake Gallery made the most incredible looking and tasting cake you have ever seen. He made a little version of me, lounging in a sexy Alice costume on a Chaise Lounge! I have never had a professional cake made for me before and this is the best one I have ever clapped eyes or teeth onto! You have to see this guy’s creations, they are brilliant!

Candee did a brilliant job with ordering bits of decor, organising everyone and making the beautiful invites. Each one had a letter from the Mad Hatter and March Hare and was tied with a ribbon and little brass key! I wore the ribbon and key around my wrist at the party!

I made some chocolate and strawberry swirl Angel Delights and banoffee pies served in china cups and saucers, some talking flowers and a tiny door with the help of Mr. Mew! I hand painted wood grain on the front, a keyhole and bunny shape and then aged it. We were so pleased with the finished article and it was suspended on the front door as people entered.

Tis the Season to be a Wally…

I seem to have odd spouts of accidents at the moment. Yesterday I knocked my brain into the sink when I walloped my head on the corner of the kitchen cupboard door and an hour later smashed the glass salt seller too. I decided to vacate to the sofa lest I turn the light on and burn the house down.

After reassuring myself that hemming my knuckles with the sewing machine would be a highly unlikely situation I altered the rest of my beloved Heyday trousers to fit, mended 2 vintage dresses and watched Hart’s War with Mr. Mew; balancing an ice pack on my head.

It is most peculiar when you bosh your bonce. In horror movies, blood spurts out of the wound like an Italian courtyard fountain. This creates a visual spectacle equal to the pain. Although the pain was excruciating, there was no blood, no graze, no bump… nothing to show anyone why I was shouting ‘Ow’ other than holding my head and pointing at the cupboard door like a 3 year old. In fact I was so stunned I couldn’t even say owt.

I am sure as a child we were made of sponge balls.  I would have knock after knock; suffer bruised knees, picked scabs and fashion a plethora of first aid plasters, but after a quick hug from Ma and a loving squeeze I would bounce back ready for the next accident.  As an adult, I hit my head and I’m not able to do anything for half the flipping day. Where have my sponge balls gone?!?!

Halloween Costumes and Pumpkin Pies!

Halloween decorations at home with my pumpkin pie!

I am a huge fan of Halloween, always have been. A great excuse to dress up and carve pumpkins, Mr. Mew and I decorated our little cottage with Halloween decoration ranging from paper lanterns to a little bubbling couldron!

On Friday we went to my friend HP Saucy’s Halloween party. We only knew a few people there, but the place looked great! Amazing what you can do with a role of black bin bags! Most had gone as witches and the like, one guy had not even bothered (so I took him into HP’s bedroom, eyebrow pencilled an eye on his palm and transformed him into David Blane…) and Mr. Mew and I went as the Phantom of the Opera and a 1930’s Pierrot clown!

My Pierrot clown Halloween costume

You may have spotted a severed finger in my hand above…This is in fact a Witches Finger that I made a large batch of for the party! Simply look up a shortbread biscuit mix (use plain flour and no baking powder or raising agent), create finger sized sausages after letting it cool in the fridge for an hour and press down lightly on 2 points to form a knuckle. Press an almond flake in the top as a nail and pop into a hot over for 20 minutes. Once cooled, carefully remove the almond and re-attach it with red icing. I also dipped the ends to make them more gorey and scored 3 lines on the knuckles!

Wiches Fingers made by Kitten!

HP being strangled by her partner Dai

On Halloween itself we invited our best friends Candee and Jocob over to watch a horror film (The Cottage). The front room looked an absolute picture and I had layed out marshmallows in the shape of pumpkins in a little black couldron on the table, a hand shapes jelly and a new pumpkin pie with witches fingers bursting out of the top! How good does that look! (see image below).

I made up the recipe as I had lost the original and it ended up being  far nicer. It is a mixture of meringue and pumpkin, hence the name ‘Kitten’s Merkin Pie’ which is fitting for a burlesque dancer 😉

3 x egg whites whisked until peaked

3/4 cup of brown or light brown sugar

Savoury pastry case to save time

1/2 tsp of mixed spice

1 tsp of cinammon

1/2 tsp of nutmeg

1/2 tsp ginger

1 x Large squeeze of lemon (add a little ornage rind if you like too! Yummy!)

flesh from 1 medium pumpkin

A pot of single cream for pouring

Cover the pumpkin flesh with water and boil for an hour. Sieve it and squeeze out as much liquid as possible. Leave to cool whilst you go and carve your pumpkin!

Mix all the dry ingredients together and then fold in the meringue and pumpkin flesh being careful not to loose the air bubbles. Squeeze in the lemon, pop into the pastry case and bake for 20minutes (or until a knife comes out clean from the centre). Serve warm with single cream. I also stuck in 5 Witches Finger biscuits for shock factor!

Kitten von Mew with Sugar Skull makeup, pumpkin pie and jelly!

Like the makeup? I was going to do it for HP’s party, but decided on the pierrot which was a good job as my friend Helen did it! This was my first attempt at sugar skull makeup (think Day of the Dead, which incidentally was yesterday!). I used the white makeup I buoght for the clown costume, my liquid eye liner and eyeshadow palette to colour it in. I also painted Mr. Mew too!

Mr. Mew and Kitten's Halloween makeup!

Candee and Jacob arrived at the door and we whipped open the curtain to shock them. They looked fantastic and we all laughed at each other through the glass before letting them in!

Candee and Jacob, Halloween 2011

How amazing do they look?! Funnily enough, this is the talented lady that took the large photo of Mr. Mew and I behind her!

They brought with them a murder of fake crows and about 4 or 5 carved pumpkins that we dotted around the room with our own. I was thrilled to learn that this was their first tast of pumpkin pie that they seem to enjoy (or graciously chewed!) and were impressed by the finger biscuits too!

We had such a great time and next year we will all be together again for Halloween in Budapest and Transylvania on a steam train journey!

Weekends and Weddings

Apologies to everyone who enjoyed this blog post. Unfortunately my efforts at family bonding seem to have been lost on certain people and I was asked to remove the photos I took of the wedding party and the post. I am off on holiday for a week now, so will post holiday snaps when I get back! x

Pets are the Funniest Things…

My fish at work...yes that is an Easter Island head...

As many of you know, my family used to have 2 gorgeous cats called Rupert and Rosey who were larger than life characters. I adored having cats around, but unfortunately where I live now, we are not allowed any! The landlady has a huge dog who is so sweet and gentle, but she roams freely in the grounds and turns wicked when faced with felines apparently. So cats are not allowed. The pussycats had incredibly strong personalities. Rosey was an utter flirt, would shout and chatter to everyone and loved having men in the room. She loved rough play and there were many occasions where guests would look on in sheer horror as we pummeled her ribcage like a masseuse, whilst she dribbled and purred in appreciation. Rupert was a complete lap cat and had a bad habit of biting noses when he was younger. A pure ginger tiger with huuuuge padding paws, this was one mog who craved cuddles, food and plastic bags or wrapping paper to rustle around in. On so many occasions I half expect 2 furry friends to bound over to me as I come down the drive to visit my parents. I don’t think you ever get over losing pets you have known for so long.

I finally decided to get some fish as I have a little fish tank with 4 Minnows in it at work and love them to pieces (Churchill, Liz, Rommel and Miller). I bought a fish tank and added Dame, Vera and Lynn who didn’t seem to appreciate our efforts to keep them alive and happy at all. We decided to start again with 4 smaller Minnows – Dame II, Vera II, Lynn II and Glenn who have been living happily in their tank for 2 weeks. We decided to change 10% of the water so popped the top off and skimmed the top of the tank on Saturday. Sunday I was getting concerned as Glenn seemed to be missing in action and would not normally hide himself in the cave-like barracks at the back of the tank. After a lot of searching we discovered he seemed to have vacated the tank and neither of us could figure out how as we know we had not taken him out whilst changing the water. Late yesterday evening we discovered the mystery of Glenn Miller’s disappearance. Upon taking the top off of the tank and starting the cleaning process, the fish sometimes get a little over-excited and flick their tails at the surface. It seems that Glenn, in a moment of territorial vigour, had hurled himself out of the water. Inconveniently for him, he landed by the china cabinet instead of back into the tank and we found his body last night whilst watching King Kong. Twasn’t beauty that killed the beast it was stupidity. Poor Glenn.

To be honest, the girls seem relieved about his removal. Having regained the stage, they seem more full of life and colour as they swim around their submerged battle tank. One came to the glass and I am sure I saw her mouth ‘We’re back ladies!’

I came into the office this morning (I am a creative writer in the week at a gift company) and my work friend Becky had gained herself some chickens over the weekend. She discovered when they were dropped off that they were in fact a chicken and 2 cocks, so it looks like she will have eggs flying around like ping pong balls at a Thai lap dancing club. Im looking forward to the prospect of fresh poached eggs on the odd morning!

There is something very therapeutic about having pets, something to look after like a child, take your mind off of life’s problems. One of these days we will buy a place and get 2 kitty-cats, but until then Glenn (R.I.P), Miller, Dame II, Vera II, Lynn II, Liz, Rommel and Churchill are an absolute pleasure.

My Article in WWII Reenactors Magazine – March Edition

I am well known for my hoarding skills, just as much as my pin-up poses! Having been an avid carboot sale hunter since the age of 4, I have progressed to antique markets and flea fairs in the vain hope of a bargain. Nowadays carboot sales frustrate me a little. Gone are the days of 20p sales, as antique dealers set up camp next to people clearing their loft of 90’s decor. But do not fret dear Catnips, for there are still bargains to be had and treasures to be found! Take my Art Deco sofa set for example, bought for £15 from Ebay and recently valued on the Antique Roadshow at £800. Now that is pretty good going!

Kitten von Mew's Art Deco 3 Piece Suite

I cannot say I own anything of great rarity, but have certainly found my own personal jewels. If like me you just want to search for things to improve your vintage inspired home and WWII collection at the same time then read on! Until the next flea market, I was left twiddling my thumbs, so Mr. Mew and I stepped out for a wonder around Warwick. Not the most enthralling shopping hub, but with 2 lovely antiques centres, I thought I would show him the old military booth in the main one. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to us, the poor man who had manned it for these many years had ‘passed on’ so we were left down hearted. We did however totter along to the other one, more famed for costume jewellery antique homeware and random books on cricket. There is a small vintage clothing section at the back of the shop, but prices are rediculous (£32 for a pair of evening gloves?!). I myself love old books and the covers of sheet music, so after gawping and hopelessly hinting at the things I couldn’t afford, we headed to the book stand where I could peruse the pages of Enid Blyton, Biggles and more. There is nothing quite like the smell of old books. Take a good long sniff of your Kindle or computer screen and tell me it smells just as good. I adore it when you find one marked with the receivers name, or the odd ticket used as a bookmark still lodged in one of its well-worn pages. We came away with a few lovely finds…

The first ‘Spinsters Progress’, bought for £1, is well used and first owned by the W.H.Smith & Son’s Library in London. A first edition, this book also has the fabulous ‘BOOK PRODUCTION WAR ECONOMY STANDARD’ logo inside, which is something I always look out for and collect. This mark, found framed by a book and sitting lion is found in one of the front pages of some books printed during WWII in England. Because of paper, glue, thread and ink rationing, books started to be produced meeting certain criteria, much like CC41 clothing. Look out for this mark in your own collections. Usually you can also see what date the book is publiched and which addition it is. Older books will say ‘First Edition … 1942 / First Published’ or ‘Tenth Edition/ Tenth Impression…1949’ etc, whilst post war books may have a line of numbers (something like 6 5 4 3 2 56 57 58 59). The lowest number usually indicates the edition (the example shows that the book is the 6th edition), whilst the larger numbers, if any, indicates the date of print (1956 in the example). This can be handy when looking for collectable first editions such as your children’s Harry Potter books, your Ian Flemming collection and the like. Bear in mind that just because it is a first edition, it doesn’t make it rare or collectible! It’s just a nice thing to look out for when you are at a rummage sale or confronted with a box of old books in your loft. The second hard back book I found was H.M.S. by Klaxon and bought as a gift for Mr. Mew. At a whopping £12, I wouldn’t normally spend extravagances on such an item, but it is rather a lovely book. Dating it is a little confusing as although it states 1918, the first entry was written by Professor J. Scott of a ‘recent Airship Journey accross the old Bed of the North Sea, July 1, 1923.’ A collection of short Naval stories and poems centred around the 1st World War, it is a really interesting read and was definitely worth the money. Reading true and old accounts of the wars is always fascinating. If you are into WWI or the British Navy, this could be a good book for you and can be found online.

On to my favourites! Now, any lover of WWII newspaper humour and political comic satire would have heard of Jon’s ‘Two Types’. These two British characters enthralled soldiers and public alike with their rather forthright ‘Damned if we do, damned if we don’t’ manner. These two thoroughly English gents military gents, gave everyone a well needed chuckle in the war years. We happened across a copy of ‘Jon’s Two Types in Italy’, which although slightly dog eared was complete and a bargain at £5. Very collectable, grabbing yourself anything to do with Jon’s Two Types is definitely a worthwhile investment and a great read for the coffee table! Another bargain in my book *titter* was a hardback of ‘New Pocket Cartoons by Osbert Lancaster’ for £3.50. When I initially saw this book, I was convinved that it was a 1970’s publication, with a pale pink and grey illustrated dust jacket over a bright yellow cover! On closer inspection I was pleased that it was infact a 1941 First Edition. A fantastic book, it has reprinted satorical cartoons from the Daily Express, some rather non P.C. for the modern day audience. Books in hand, we made our way to the till, stopping briefly so I could sift through a wad of music sheets! I just LOVE the covers and typography of some of these and managed to grab an original Singing in the Rain, Auf Wiederseh’n Sweetheart and Lay Down Your Arms for 50p each. Bargain!

So all in all a successful trip and the kind gentleman of the shop also knocked off another £2, which made the sheet music free. My next stop… a good old table top rummage sale and a flea market, so I will let you know how I get on! Word for the wise, it is a lot more fun going with a set budget and seeing what bargains you can pick up or you may find yourself flittering away that cash before you can blink. Save up your coins and set yourself a limit. With so many carboots and fairs coming up in the summer months, you will need to pace yourself for some good bargain hunting! Never be afraid to offer a slightly lower price, but don’t insult the seller by going rediculously low. They will usually have put up the price of their goods by £1 to £5 depending on what the item is, just incase someone fancies a barter. Happy hunting!
