Avoncroft Museum 1940’s Weekend 2023

Avoncroft Museum 1940’s Weekend 2023

Gossiping with with girls

Avoncroft is an open air museum in Bromsgrove that hosts several events throughout the year AND has a little light railway to boot!

One of the most popular events is their 1940’s weekend and time there were a few changes. We were treated to vintage stalls (huzzah!) and a fashion show, that I was proud to be part of.

1940’s Post Woman Uniform

I was incredibly nervous on the Saturday as it was the first time singing since Severn Valley Railway and only my second singing event since my operation! I have to be so careful with my voice now and can only do short sets or I could permanently destroy my singing voice. Luckily Guy Roles (Avoncroft entertainment organiser and UK 1940s Radio Station presenter) completely understood. He did all he could to make sure I did everything right! Last time I sang I lost my singing voice for 4 months, so I’m following my surgeon’s strict advice from now on.

I managed to look around a few of the displays on Sunday, but vintage heels and boggy grass don’t mix! The buildings make a fantastic backdrop for the troops though and some groups even stay in the barns overnight! Remember how chilly it gets in October?

So keep your eye out for events at this lovely museum. They have a fabulous windmill, a 1940’s prefab (my favourite), a cafe selling gorgeous handmade cakes (the lime and passion fruit was amazing!) and so much more to wander round and see.

Avoncroft WW2 Weekend 2022

Avoncroft WW2 Weekend 2022

This weekend I sang at Avoncroft Museum’s WW2 Weekend! The event had only been organised in 6 weeks, so I knew it wouldn’t be as rammed with reenactors and stalls as it would’ve been. The open air museum is vast and has a large range of buildings from 1800’s to a 40’s prefab! They even have a vintage showman’s carriage (my favourite).

There were some allies forces (Brits and Yanks), with a spattering of military vehicles. The setup looked great against the old buildings and you just couldn’t take a bad photos!

Remember folks… please don’t clamber on/ in or touch people’s vehicles without their permission! It’s very bad form! ALWAYS ask permission and they are allowed to say ‘no’ as it is their pride and joy. I asked obviously!!!

It was wonderful to catch up with my good friend Mark and see his new (to him) Willy’s Jeep name Bouncin’ Babe! Mark also overseas my official Facebook page when I’m too busy, so he is ace.

I managed to do a bit of modelling for Heyday Vintage at the same time, which was swell! This is the new Josephine dress I have teamed with Lulu Hun shoes, a gorgeous crocheted bag by Doodlebug Bags and a vintage hat.

As ever, I was super-nervous about my voice coping! Last weekend I lost my voice and last year, at a different Avoncroft event, I lost my singing voice and couldn’t do the second day! So all week I was inwardly panicking, drinking my weight in hot ginger and trying not to raise my voice too much.

Huzzah! My voice held up beautifully and I made sure to take care of it between sets too. I had great feedback both days and met some absolutely wonderful people. it was super to see Guy Roles once more and to meet The Vintage Class Singers for the first time.

As well as the buildings, Avoncroft also has a mini railway; much to the joy of children and land girls alike!

Betsy and I had a go and it was lovely! Only 50p a ride and a nice little bit of fun to end the day.

Although a very much scaled down event, it was superb and everyone I spoke to has a brilliant time. Thank you to all the organisers and volunteers who pulled off the event in such a short amount of time!

Photoshoot with Donna Lawson

Photoshoot with Donna Lawson

In July I had a lovely, relaxed photoshoot at home with Donna Lawson. The weather was great, so we managed to do some outdoor shots too! I meant to post these weeks ago, but what with Fantasy Forest (I’ll post some photos next!) and Covid (yes, I know, 3 times now) I have only just got the mental energy to sit down and do this blog post!

Based in Evesham, Donna specialises in street photography, but decided to branch out more into family, wedding and boudoir shoots. You can also get casting portraits, live gig photos and corporate images too!

I really hope you enjoy the ones I selected. I can thoroughly recommend Donna, especially for more candid photos that capture moments you didn’t even notice. It was a real pleasure working with this lovely lady!

Pinup Fairy Photoshoot

Pinup Fairy Photoshoot

WARNING! Not appropriate for under 18 years of age.

Yet again I was lucky enough to shoot with the unrivalled Neil ‘Kez’ Kendall in Chester. His sets are a feast for the eyes, with props, theatrical backdrop and jaw dropping scenery. Whether Nez has skilfully crafted it himself, or commissioned special pieces from one of his many talented associates, everything has been lovingly created and then set up like a professional set designer.

I had a complete nightmare with figuring out an outfit for this shoot. I am CRAZY about fairies, so didn’t want to regret my choice. I usually wear my preraphaelite ensemble, but wanted a more vintage pinup vibe for this shoot mixed with 1930’s.

My first outfits came and they were horrendous! Cheap and nasty knock offs from a website that mysteriously vanished when I tried to complain. This is the second time I’ve been duped by fake websites and I won’t order anything from sites I don’t know in future. I was disheartened and very stressed, but took a chance on some black cobweb lingerie from Killstar. Luckily it fit reasonably well. The bra could’ve done with being the next size up, but they had run out and knew I could make it work. I had been saving some gorgeous What Katie Did stockings for years (emerald green tops and seams), so was so glad to be able to use them for something so special! They twinned nicely with the green fairy wings that Neil had for the shoot.

I find it very unnerving, doing lingerie shoots nowadays. I’m sure a lot of people struggle with the same problem, but I picture what I ‘think’ I look like in my mind’s eye and am then horrified when faced with the reality. I find myself comparing my size in different photographs as I have fluctuated so much in the past 20 years. I am now a UK size 14, but can fit into the odd 12 too. Age, health and post-child changes have all played a part in how my figure has transformed during the last 6 years. I feel ‘mumsy’ rather than ‘va-va-voom’ and it takes a lot of effort (and a bloody good waist cincher) to make me feel confident about my shape.

I am loving these photos that Neil Kendall took. Definitely a confidence boost and rather liberating too. I asked him for some light touch ups (taking away some of the overhang and softening the folds that were made more apparent by dramatic lighting), but didn’t want to deceive the viewer (including myself) that I was a smaller size than I am.

I need to start loving my 41 year old body and remembering everything it has been through. No I’m not a svelte and toned gym bod. My boobs resemble a lazy-eyed chameleon, I have cellulite to rival the shrivelled up satsumas that are currently losing all hope in my fruit bowl and wobble that would make a trifle jealous. Im sure I have same hang ups as a lot of people…but hell…who doesn’t like a bit of trifle…?

Heyday Online Trousers

As you all know, I am a huge fan of Heyday Online and am lucky enough to be one of the main models for their wonderful vintage reproduction clothing.

Their trousers are some of my favourite pieces and I wear them almost every day! Flattering, high waisted and wide legged, they have a perfect 30’s/40’s style and can be twinned with knitted sweaters in winter or tie tops in summer!

Heyday have just brought out some more pinstriped trousers and I thought I would share some photos we took of them! A great tip… Vertical stripes are slimming and lengthen the legs!

Vintage Photoshoot with CSN Photography at GWSR

In early March I had the pleasure of working with Chris Nicholls of CSN Photography! We visited the beautiful and peaceful GWSR as they prepared for yet another busy season. The weather was questionable, but we made the most of the odd sunny spell between the showers!

So here are my top pick pics for you! In the 1940’s themed images I am wearing an original 40’s swing coat, crepe dress and hat. The shoes are from Johnson’s Originals. In the 50’s/60’s images I am wearing an original novelty print vintage dress and Clark’s Shoes.

I am very much looking forward to shooting with CSN Photography again. As he is used to frequenting at vintage military events, Chris has a keen eye for detail! It’s a shame we couldn’t shoot more of the dress, but it was flipping cold at this point and the weather was really turning!

Bridal Boudoir Shoot with Lee Parker

I am finally showing you some more photos from the fantastic shoot I did late last year with Lee Parker Photography (Sussex). We only had the West Midlands venue for 6 hours, but managed to do a few different themes within that time and incorporated some bouquets, shoes and veil from local businesses!

This bridal boudoir photo shoot turned out beautifully and features shoes and veil from Boho Bride Boutique in Stratford upon Avon as well as brooch bouquets by Kerry Gold at Bouquet Chic Unique. The stockings are vintage 1950’s as is my bustier and the garters have been made by Extra Special Touch.

My hair was masterfully styles by the talented Karen D Bebbington of KDB Vintage Hairstyling!

I will post images of the other parts of the shoot asap and we have another booked in April! Yippeeeeee!

If you would like to book Lee Parker for a shoot then you can message him

Severn Valley Railway 1940’s Event

I meant to write this post LAST year, but just never got around to it. It was more of a chance to tell you about Kim Clark at Time Machine Vintage than anything! I wore her gorgeous summery dress to last year’s SVR WW2 event and Betsy wore the matching little playsuit! I had a few other things made by the talented lady, but could never find the perfect weather and location to don the all in one trouser playsuit. Low and behold, June came round again and so did Severn Valley Railway, with sunshine and warm weather! So I got to wear 2 Time Machine outfits at this fantastic event!

Both have been sooooo comfy and far more enjoyable to walk around in than a suit and high heels. There is so much to see at the 40’s event and quite a bit of walking, so I wanted to be comfy but of the period. The linen jumpsuit is actually based on a 1930’s pattern, but Kim and I loved the styling and it was easy to create an early 40’s look with it too. I cannot wait to wear it on holiday with some yellow bakelite jewellery and a more 30’s twist! Kim has a real eye for vintage style fabrics (and sometimes gets her hands on 40’s and 50’s originals too!).

It was fantastic to be back at Severn Valley. It had its ups and downs in past years, but it truly is a lovely event and a wonderful day out. Where else can you get on a steam train and stare out the window at soldiers, scenery, elephants and rhinos?!

Pushchairs are not easy to get on and off the trains, so you may find yourself carrying your little people more than anything, but it is a perfect event for families. Some of the ‘vintage’ stalls were more 80’s does 40’s and polkadot 50’s dresses, but there were some good authentic stalls inside the Engine House (albeit flipping pricey!!!!). You may want to bring your own lunch and snacks as food is very pricey, but you can always have a cooked breakfast to start they day off at the station’s restaurant.

Very much looking forward to going again next year! Here are some photos of the 2016 and 2017 Severn Valley Railway 1940’s Events…

I love the fact that Betsy has never actually been on a modern train yet! Only vintage trams and steam trains!

Miss Bamboo Clothing

miss bamboo sailor dress

I seem to have a real love for nautical themed clothing at the moment! Having hankered after another sailor dress and being unimpressed about the quality and fit of various ones I’ve found, I thought I would give Miss Bamboo a go.

Boy am I glad I did! The fit is great and I have not only gone to the beach in this, but have done gardening and plan to wear it to an event too! Made in the UK and based on an original 40’s version found in Life Magazine, it has been lovingly recreated for today’s figures. Machine washable and featuring a matching belt, I just wish it came in the white version too…but I wouldn’t be gardening in it…

So check out her website, it even features some great men’s Hawaiian shirts too! You can also find Miss Bamboo on Facebook.

Rocket Originals Clothing

About 7 years back I purchased by first pair of Rocket Originals saddle shoes. It was such a relief to find flat footwear that was still vintage, looked good with skirts as well as trousers and were super comfy at events! They were also great for dancing in! This year I got some Veronica Sandals as I wanted something a little more glamorous, but still very practical. Usually very nervous about solid soled shoes, I was really surprised how comfortable these are and I cannot wait to prance around Greece in them this June!

At this year’s Stoneleigh Militaria I stumbled across their glorious stall and realised that I had been completely unaware that Rocket did clothing too! They had a lovely little selection of women’s tops and I will show you a couple now. Sometimes being a mum is messy work, but that doesn’t mean I don’t still want my vintage/ retro look. Rocket Originals’ knitwear is made of acrylic, fits like a dream and is easy to bung in the wash. I’ve twinned mine with Heyday trousers and Collectif capris!

Kaye was kind enough to answer a few questions for me…

You are famed for you vintage style shoes, what made you branch out into clothing?

It’s always been a mixture of footwear and clothing.  We were first trading in 1988, and back then we sold vintage clothing we imported direct from the USA and bought from various dealers in the UK, a range of T Shirts which we screen printed ourselves and footwear.  We started having our own brand of ladies footwear and knitwear manufactured in 2006, and men’s shirts from 2008.

Everyone knows what a sucker for knitwear I am, have you a favourite piece in your range?

We don’t really have favourites, we choose the patterns carefully so they’re all styles we really like.  We particularly liked the Victory sweaters (free pattern still available on the V&A website).  Another we’ve liked is our fairisle square neck style, which we had knitted in loads of colour variations.
There are so many amazing 40’s, 50’s and 60’s styles. How did you choose what to make?

We have trouble choosing what NOT to make!  It’s easy really, out of our collection we pick the styles we like and think our customers would prefer.  We have all our own brand of shoes and clothing made as ‘limited editions’ and bring out new stock rather than remaking the same styles, because there’s still such a lot to go at. There are so many vintage shoes and patterns etc that we have in our collection and want to copy, and we’re always looking for more.
I had a pair of your super saddle shoes and couldn’t believe the comfort and quality! Do you have a favourite style?

We have loads of favourite styles. We love our saddle shoes (copied from a vintage American pair we bought), our recent Gibson style, and also have a lot of favourites among the ladies wedges.  Some of the men’s shoes are hand made in England and we like them for their quality.
What is your favourite era and why?

Our favourite era is early 50’s American.  But we love anything from the 40’s and 50’s for lots of reasons, be it music, clothing, cars and furnishings. We also love art deco homes and furniture and that was the style for our last home, but our current one is mid century modern.

So make sure you head on over to the Rocket Originals website or visit their stall at events. From sandals to stripey sweaters, they really do compliment your vintage wardrobe beautifully!
