Ironbridge 1940’s Charity Walk

The wonderful organisers of the Ironbridge WWII Weekend put on a special event yesterday, which included a charity walk in aid of Pilgrim Bandits.

The Malthouse put on a lovely daytime and evening do and made a wonderful base for the event! With bunting, flags on the tables, Willy’s Jeep, Classic Car and 40’s music coming out of an old wooden radio, they had done a lovely job.

The weather was beautifully mild and the scenery spectacular. I had never had the pleasure of visiting Ironbridge before, but knew we would come back every year. Even though the famous bridge was being repaired, it didn’t take away from the stunning buildings, greenery and river!

I did 2 short singing sets in the daytime and trailed my microphone lead outside to the courtyard to make the most of the beautiful day! I did have 1 technical hitch, which was the fact that I was planning an Isis Wing Dance (Kieran’s Requiem) as the finale for my evening set, but the ceilings were too low for my wing span!

The only thing I could think of was to do it in the outside courtyard on go on the hunt for some bamboo fans and silk scarves to create fab veils with! We hot stepped it to the Antiques Centre before my first set to see what we could find. Nothing. But I did come away with a few charms for my charm bracelet! Some vintage fetish shoes, a burlesque dancer and pussycat.

So that was that. I explained the situation to the organisers and they were absolutely fine with it. It was going to be tricky as the patching was uneven and outside tables still rather close, but I wasn’t going to let them down.

After my first set we sauntered down the street to the soldier memorial and admired more pretty buildings and scenery. We chatted to a lovely lady in her garden with 2 crazy springer spaniels and headed back to The Malthouse for some lunch!

The second set was very lively, with more people and a super atmosphere! I really was in love with this place and the staff were so welcoming. I even got one of their themed B&B rooms to get changed in for my evening performance!

As we had a while until my last set, we headed to the Telford Shopping Centre to watch The Quiet Place (really good!) and then went to my room to get prepped.

As I was doing my hair and makeup I got to thinking about the last time I performed burlesque outside and realised it was with the USO Shows. Memories flooded my head…Giggles with Kieran and Sandra, repairing feather fans after strong winds had broken them, the Clover Sisters, dancing…then I realised what act I was doing (one I created in Kieran’s memory) and couldn’t stop the tears. I had to repair my eye make up constantly and will my false eyelashes to stick. Finally composed, Richard helped me tuck my costume fabric into my dress and we headed downstairs. I knew I looked a bit lumpy and bumpy, but hoped that people would forgive this once they saw the finale. There were soooo many people and most were dressed for the occasion! They waved their flags, sang along and made me forget all my worries! With a mild threat, I got them all outside and someone helped move one of the speakers to the doorway for my burlesque act. The performance space was still small and the tips of my wings were an ear hair away from some of the audience, but I just went with it. Whilst dancing I bantered back and forth with some of the watchers and my melancholy act turned into fun and laughter. I didn’t want to leave.

So dear Ironbridge, I will be back! The seed has been firmly planted at The Malthouse and we have a few plans in the pipeline. Thank you for your hospitality, support and darned right loveliness x

Lee Parker Photos – War and Peace Revival

I thought I would make these into a separate post as they deserve their own space. Lee Parker is a wonderful events photographer and helps out at the show each year. He took some photos of my Isis wing dance that I would love to share with you all. He has captured the movement and emotion perfectly. I have also included one singing on the 50’s/ 60’s evening!  The Isis wing act can be seen here.

Burgh Island Valentine’s Weekend – Part 1

I was thrilled to once again perform at this gorgeous Art Deco hotel! It has been around 5 or 6 years since I was last there and was the 1st Burlesque dancer to perform at the hotel.

I thought I would share some of my photos with you and have more to come!

Bournemouth Photos!

I had a wonderful time in Bournemouth when I went there to perform at a Blitz Ball! I have never really walked around the town before, but once you look passed the chain stores, there are some real treasures! It is a relatively new town, born in 1810, so the architecture is a gorgeous mix with some fabulous 1920’s bits thrown in (and the obligatory modern catastrophes!). There is one place we found just outside the town with a whole street of vintage and antique shops, so for a whole day we staggered open-mouthed around a treasure trove of curiosities.

The Blitz Ball went really well and was held at the Bournemouth Flying Club at the airport. Unfortunately due to the weather, the daytime event was postponed, making the dance less popular. It was a shame as the DJ was fantastic and the hosts a delight. I have experience myself of hosting Blitz Balls and know what hard work they are and how much money can be lost through the expense and hard work it takes. ST Events did a grand job, but obviously couldn’t help the weather that had scuppered its big day. Ah well, other people’s loss is my gain as there was more room to dance!

The people that were there were dressed up to the nines, whether they were 1940’s enthusiasts or not! I did a singing set early in the evening before donning my bomber girl corset for a fan dance at 10.30. Low and behold one of the staves snapped just as I was finishing my last spin! The feathery swine!!!

For the rest of the evening I wore a gorgeous original 1940’s gown with red and white stripes that I bought at Stoneleigh Militaria and a pair of pale blue Johnson’s Originals shoes, with a hair bow to match.

I hope you enjoy the photos below, I will do a separate post about Russell Cotes House as it was too incredible not to warrant its own article…

Hello Catnips and welcome to 2013!

Please take a moment to look at my dates page for this year’s performances. I am determined not to burn the candle at both ends this year as for the past 4 years at least I have overdone it. I still have exciting things planned such as the Cold War Express in June which will be amazing (and over my Birthday!) and hopefully the new War and Peace Revival in July too! I have 1 performance a month from March to November (some are private bookings) so that suits me just fine.

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s. Here is to a new start, clean slate, a year that will be what YOU make it. Go get ’em!

Hazards In The/ In My Field

On a rather soggy weekend at Wartime in the Vale (June), Mother Nature slapped me round the face with the back of her gale-force hand and tested my hairspray and heels to the limit with rain. It then struck me how different and more prepared you have to be as an entertainer at WWII and other open air events.

Walking around as a visitor, you bask in the glory of vintage vehicles, reenactors, stalls and entertainers, but forget that those singers, dancers and models that enthrall their audiences aren’t effortlessly immaculate. They have to walk the same cobbled streets you walk, brace the same weather and still have to look as if they stepped out of a magazine or movie, no matter how boggy the fields.

I always love watching such performers as Lola Lamour, who (like me) is a complete devil for iconic 1940’s fashions, but to abandon her original snakeskin heels for a pair of wellies would degrade her star-like status and outfit. So we must hop, wobble, hobble and skip to dodge the hazards that may turn our nylons into “Goodbye, so long!”s and beloved pinup shoes from ‘irreplaceable’ to ‘untraceable’ under the mud. I stare enviously at those wearing military gear and warm boots, but am hell bent in wearing my lovely hats and 40’s dresses! Sure I could shelter in a tent for the entire event, but what would the fun in that be? I want to be out, meeting people, seeing things and buying bargains!

Portaloo’s can also be a strategical nightmare as you force your layered outfit into the confined space, dodge the floor of mass disruption (the glory of mud caught in the deep tread of boots), try and balance your handbag as you struggle with your straight-jacket underwear and test the endurance of the wall and door with many an accidental elbow ‘thwack’ as you try and rearrange your outfit again. You either exit looking as if you have been wrestling hippos in there or with an upturned nose and shudder. Classic signs of a girdle struggle is when you can hear the lady in question jumping up and down in the cubicle and she comes out all red faced and puffed out. I almost feel like waving a little flag and giving a cheer to those poor souls that survive the porta-hoopla.

Performing at field events can be the most tricky of all, especially if the changing room is in a completely different area. I say room, when this could actually be a tent depending on the event. I remember fondly getting ready in the back of the USO tent with just a gas lamp and tiny compact mirror; ducking and diving behind stacks of debris to change into my Burlesque outfits and praying that my pasties would be somewhat even…

My most recent event was a huge challenge because of the weather! Getting changed in a nice large mess hut was great, but then negotiating the journey back to the performance tent (where I would have to wait outside to make my entrance) in the mud and rain was a different story. I had decided to do my Pipe Dreams act, which is a gorgeous, sparkly WHITE costume (silly, silly kitten….), which would also showcase my new, spangle-tastic silver shoes from Johnson’s Originals (yes…I know…).

As I hid beneath my ghillie ‘tobacco’ cloak and staggered towards the entrance of the tent, a rather lively German reenactor didnt realise I was creeping up behind him and gave me a prompt kick on the knee (He was performing an energetic Morecombe and Wise dance move that would have been impressive without the plastic beer glass in hand). As the mud gave me friendly pat on the back of my fishnets and greeted my NEW SHOES with as much enthusiasm, I suddenly realised that the front of my white panel skirt also now resembled a piece of used toilet paper and I hadn’t actually started my performance yet. So what happens in this sort of situation? Do you storm off like a big stroppy Diva? No, you ruddy well get on with the show and laugh it off. Yes there were swear words later and even a disgruntled huff with furrowed brow (I know, stand back when you see these signs), but those are the hazards you have to face when working in these environments. They still enjoyed the show and I fear most of the audience were more ‘moths to my light bulbs’ than my disgraced shoes, but that is all the better. More importantly the shoes are now clean and lovely again! Huzzah!
